The title tag is the blue headline in Google's results. It's one of the strongest on-page ranking signals, and it's the main thing people read before deciding where to click. A few minutes spent on it often moves traffic more than hours spent elsewhere.
Step 1: Start with the search
Write the title around the phrase people actually type. Check:
- Your Search Console data for the queries the page already appears for.
- Google's autocomplete and "People also ask" for how people phrase it.
- The titles of the pages that rank now, to see what Google thinks the search is about.
Step 2: Put the main phrase first
Front-load the important words. Searchers scan the first few words, and the end of a long title may be cut off.

Step 3: Add one reason to click
The phrase gets you relevance. The reason to click gets you chosen:
- Benefit: "Get paid faster", "Save 30 minutes a week".
- Specifics: "7 things to check", "in 5 minutes".
- Freshness: "(2026)", "updated for GA4", only when the content really is current.
- Format: "Free", "Template", "Checklist", "Calculator".
- Audience: "for beginners", "for small businesses".
