A duplicate title tag is the same <title> used on more than one page. It's one of the most common SEO issues on small sites, especially shops, blogs and sites built from templates. Duplicate meta descriptions usually come with it.
Why duplicate titles are a problem
- Google can't tell the pages apart. The title is a strong signal of what a page is about. Identical titles suggest identical topics.
- Pages compete with each other. Instead of one strong page ranking, several weak ones take turns, or none rank well.
- Searchers can't tell them apart either. Two results with the same headline look like a mistake.
- Google rewrites them. Repetitive titles are more likely to be replaced with text Google chooses.
Duplicate titles aren't a penalty. They're a missed opportunity, and sometimes a sign of a bigger duplicate content problem.
Common causes
| Cause | Example |
|---|---|
| Template default | Every product titled "Shop | My Store" |
| Pagination | "Blog | My Site" on pages 1 to 20 |
| Variants at separate URLs | Same shoe in five colours, five identical titles |
| Parameters | ?sort=price and ?sort=name versions indexed |
| www / non-www or http / https | Whole site duplicated at two hosts |
| Copied pages | Location pages cloned with only the city changed |
