How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts titles by width, not by a fixed number of characters. On desktop the limit is about 600 pixels, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more room than narrow ones like i and l, which is why this tool measures pixels too.

Aim for 30 to 60 characters. Shorter titles waste space that could hold the words people search for, and longer ones get cut off with "…".

What makes a good title

Put the main search term near the start, say what the page does, and add your brand at the end if there's room. Every page should have its own title: duplicate titles make it hard for Google to tell pages apart.

Google sometimes rewrites titles it finds too long, stuffed with keywords or not matching the page. A clear, accurate title is the best way to keep yours.

Questions

Is the title tag the same as the H1?

No. The title tag shows in Google results and browser tabs; the H1 is the main heading on the page. They can be similar, but the title should be written to earn the click.

Does Google always show my title?

Not always. It may rewrite titles that are too long, repetitive or don't match the page.

How many pixels is the limit?

About 600 pixels on desktop. Mobile results allow a little more but wrap onto two lines.
