FAQ pages for SEO: how to write one that helps

A good FAQ page answers the questions people actually ask, in plain words, and helps you show up for long-tail searches. Here's how to find the questions, write the answers, and use FAQ schema today.

An FAQ (frequently asked questions) section collects short answers to common questions in one place. Done well, it saves your support team time, removes doubts before people buy, and gives search engines and AI tools clear answers to quote.

Why FAQs help SEO

  • Long-tail searches: questions like "do you ship to Canada" or "can I cancel anytime" are searched exactly as written.
  • Featured snippets and People also ask: short, direct answers are what Google pulls into these boxes.
  • AI answers: AI search tools look for clear question-and-answer pairs to cite.
  • Conversions: answering objections on the page stops people leaving to find answers elsewhere.

Where to find the real questions

Don't invent questions. Collect them:

  1. Support emails and chat logs: the most reliable source.
  2. Sales calls: objections people raise before buying.
  3. Google's "People also ask" boxes for your main topics.
  4. Search Console queries that are phrased as questions (filter for "how", "what", "can", "does").
  5. Reviews, yours and competitors', for recurring concerns.
  6. Forums and communities where your customers talk.

Generate questions and answers from your page

The generator on this page reads a page and writes FAQs based on what's actually on it: the questions a visitor would have, with short answers grounded in the page's content. Use it as a first draft, then check every answer is accurate.

How to write good FAQ answers

  • Answer in the first sentence. "Yes, we ship to Canada. Delivery takes 3 to 5 working days."
  • Keep answers short: usually two to four sentences. Link to a full page for more.
  • Write questions the way people ask them, not in marketing language.
  • One question per item. Don't combine "shipping and returns".
  • Keep them current. Out-of-date answers about prices or policies cause real problems.

FAQ page vs FAQ sections

FormatBest for
One central FAQ pageCompany-wide questions: billing, shipping, accounts
FAQ section on each pageQuestions specific to a product, service or tool
Help centreLarge products with many detailed how-to questions

Most sites benefit from both: a central page for general questions, and short sections on key pages for specific ones. Avoid copying the same FAQs onto dozens of pages.

What FAQ schema can still do

In 2023, Google limited FAQ rich results (the expandable questions under a search result) to well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most sites, FAQPage markup no longer produces that visual result.

FAQ schema is still valid structured data, though. It does no harm, and it labels your questions and answers clearly for any system that reads structured data. If you add it, follow the rules: the questions and answers in the markup must be visible on the page, and the page must be written by you, not user-submitted. See rich snippets for what Google still shows.

Structure tips

  • Group questions by topic with headings: Ordering, Shipping, Returns, Account.
  • Put the most common questions first.
  • Use expandable sections (HTML <details> works well) for long lists, but make sure the text is in the page's HTML, not loaded later.
  • Link from answers to the full pages they summarise.

Questions

Do FAQ pages help SEO?

Yes. They target question-style searches, can appear in featured snippets and People also ask, and give AI tools clear answers to cite.

Does FAQ schema still work?

It's valid, but since 2023 Google only shows FAQ rich results for well-known government and health sites.

How many questions should an FAQ have?

As many as people genuinely ask. A product page might have four to eight; a central FAQ page can have dozens grouped by topic.

How long should FAQ answers be?

Usually two to four sentences, with the answer in the first sentence and a link to a fuller page when needed.
