Step 1: Write the title and summary
Start with an H1 containing your site or product name, then a one- or two-sentence summary in a blockquote:
# Example Co
> Example Co makes waterproof outdoor gear for hikers and trail runners, sold online in the US and Canada.
Write the summary for someone who has never heard of you. Say what you do, for whom, and anything an assistant would need to answer questions correctly (where you operate, what you don't do).
Step 2: Add key facts
Below the summary, add a few short paragraphs or bullet points with facts people often ask about: pricing model, shipping regions, support hours, return policy, supported platforms.
Step 3: Choose the pages
Pick the 10 to 30 pages that best explain your site. Good candidates:
- Product or service overviews.
- Pricing.
- Getting-started guides and documentation.
- FAQs and policies.
- Your most useful guides or articles.
Leave out pages that don't help someone understand you: tag archives, login pages, thin blog posts.
Step 4: Group them into sections
Use H2 headings for groups, and Markdown links with a short description:
## Docs
- [Quick start](https://example.com/docs/start): set up an account in five minutes
- [API reference](https://example.com/docs/api): every endpoint with examples
## Policies
- [Returns](https://example.com/returns): 60-day free returns
## Optional
- [Company history](https://example.com/about)
The Optional section is for links an AI tool can skip if it's short on space.
Step 5: Upload it to your site root
The file must load at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, as plain text.
| Platform | How to add it |
|---|
| Static site, Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel | Put llms.txt in the public or root folder |
| WordPress | Upload via FTP or file manager to the site root, or use a plugin |
| Shopify | Shopify doesn't allow root files directly; use an app or a redirect from a page |
| Any server | Place it next to robots.txt |
Step 6: Check it
Run your site through the llms.txt checker to confirm the file loads, the structure is valid and every link works.
- Markdown versions of pages: the proposal suggests serving a clean
.md copy of each page at the same address plus .md. - llms-full.txt: one file containing the full text of your key pages, which some developer tools prefer.
Keep it up to date
Review the file whenever you launch a product, change pricing or restructure your site. An out-of-date llms.txt can lead AI tools to give people wrong answers about you.
