Article schema for blog posts and news

Article schema tells Google a page is an article and gives it the headline, author, publish date and main image. It helps your posts show the right title, date and image across Google.

Google can usually work out that a page is an article. Article schema makes it certain, and supplies the details Google uses in results, Top stories, Discover and Google News: who wrote it, when it was published and updated, and which image represents it.

Google treats them much the same for rich results. Pick the one that best describes the page.

The fields that matter

  • headline: the article's title. Keep it concise; very long headlines may be cut.
  • image: high-resolution images, ideally in several aspect ratios (16:9, 4:3, 1:1), at least 1200 pixels wide for Discover.
  • datePublished and dateModified: in ISO 8601 format with a time zone. Only update dateModified when the content meaningfully changes.
  • author: a Person (or Organization) with a name and, ideally, a URL to an author page. Use one author object per person.
  • publisher: your organisation and logo.

None of Article's properties are strictly required, but the more you include, the better Google understands the page.

Authors and trust

Google pays attention to who creates content, especially for health, money and other important topics. Clear author markup that links to a real author page, with the person's background, supports the picture of experience and expertise Google looks for.

Common article schema mistakes

  1. Dates that don't match the page. The visible date and the markup should agree.
  2. Updating dateModified without changing content. Faking freshness can backfire.
  3. Author name with extra text like "By Sam Rivera, Editor". Put only the name in name.
  4. Several people in one author object. Use a separate object for each author.
  5. Missing or tiny images.

Add it to your posts

Most blogging platforms and SEO plugins add article schema automatically; check their output with the schema checker, since they often miss author URLs or images. For a custom site, fill in the generator on this page and paste the JSON-LD into your post template.
